Not all naps are created equal. Here's how long yours should be.
Find your ideal time to sleep or wake up
Calculate my sleep cycles →Not all naps are equal. The duration determines which sleep stage you wake up from, and that directly affects how you feel:
| Duration | Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 10–20 min | Power nap ⚡ | Quick alertness and energy boost. You do not enter deep sleep. |
| 30 min | ⚠️ Avoid | You wake up in deep sleep = strong sleep inertia |
| 60 min | ⚠️ Risky | Deep sleep without completing the cycle. Grogginess. |
| 90 min | Full cycle 🟢 | A complete cycle with REM. You wake up refreshed and creative. |
If you have little time, a 20-minute nap (power nap) is ideal: it recharges you without leaving you groggy. If you have more time and can afford it, a 90-minute nap completes a full cycle and wakes you during light sleep.
Never between 30 and 60 minutes — that is the "danger zone" where you wake up in deep sleep feeling worse than before.
Between 1 PM and 3 PM, when your alertness naturally dips (the post-lunch slump). After 3 PM it may interfere with nighttime sleep.
