Sleep is not a uniform state. Throughout the night, your brain goes through a series of cycles lasting approximately 90 minutes each. Each complete cycle includes several distinct stages, and completing them is essential for proper physical and mental recovery.
A typical cycle consists of four stages: three NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) stages and one REM stage. NREM stages represent progressively deeper sleep, while REM is where the most vivid dreams occur and daily learning is consolidated.

If you wake up in the middle of stage N3 (deep sleep), you'll experience sleep inertia: that foggy, disoriented feeling after waking. The key is setting your alarm to go off at the end of a complete cycle, when your sleep is lightest.

This calculator uses the average duration of a sleep cycle (90 minutes) and adds a latency period of 15 minutes — the average time it takes a person to fall asleep. From there, it calculates the bedtime or wake-up times that align with the end of a complete cycle.
Waking up at the end of a cycle means you'll be in the lightest stage of sleep (N1 or N2), which minimizes sleep inertia and lets you start the day with more energy and mental clarity.
