It happens because your brain doesn't switch from sleep to wakefulness instantly. When you wake up during deep sleep (stages 3-4), parts of your brain are still in "sleep mode" while others are trying to activate. This mismatch creates the disorientation and reduced cognitive ability you feel.

Exposure to bright light within the first 30 minutes of waking suppresses melatonin and signals your brain that it's time to be alert. Open the curtains or step outside.
