Can't fall asleep? These techniques are backed by science.
Find your ideal time to sleep or wake up
Calculate my sleep cycles βDeveloped by Dr. Andrew Weil, this technique activates the parasympathetic nervous system and reduces anxiety:
Used by the U.S. military to help soldiers fall asleep in 2 minutes under any conditions:
If you haven't fallen asleep in 20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing (read a book, listen to soft music) and return to bed when you feel sleepy. Staying in bed awake trains your brain to associate the bed with insomnia.
Your body needs to drop 1-2Β°C (2-3Β°F) to initiate sleep. A warm bath 90 minutes before bed helps because when you get out, your body cools down rapidly, mimicking the natural sleep signal.
Lying down, mentally scan each part of your body from feet to head, consciously relaxing each muscle. This diverts attention from anxious thoughts.
